FOUR Extraordinary CCHS Students Win Silver Knights Awards

Cooper City dominated the number of total winners at the Silver Knight 2007 Awards May 1st at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise! Every one of our nominees is a top-notch Cowboy or Cowgirl, and we are very proud of them all! We walked away with FOUR Silver Knights and TWO runners-up!

TWO CCHS Students Receive National Merit Scholarship Awards

Congratulations to CCHS Seniors Trista D. Burch and Melissa L. Ohlmann for being selected as 2007 National Merit Scholars. We are so proud of their accomplishments. They are two of eight Broward County Public Schools High School seniors among 116 Florida winners of the National Merit $2,500 Scholarships in announcements recently made by officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Approximately 2,500 distinguished high school seniors from across the country were chosen from a pool of more than 15,000 finalists in the 2007 National Merit Scholarship Program. Winners were judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. A committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors selected the winners.


Mr. Pichardo Awarded BTN Teacher of the Year and Students Place in National Competition

Mr. Pichardo, CCHS Television Production Advisor, received Broward Teen News Teacher of the year on Wednesday, May 9th. Mr. Pichardo was recognized for his outstanding contribution to BTN and his commitment to his students in Television Production. He was also praised for his work at BEACON television. Last fall, Mr. Pichardo along with staff of BEACON, transmitted the BCAA Football game of the week. With only 2 years teaching, Mr. Pichardo is a newcomer to CCHS, but this award and all the awards his students have won demonstrate his dedication to his students along with his knowledge and love of TV.  Mr. Pichardo is also currently the Fine Arts department head and has been selected to serve as chair for next year. Also, we congratulate Dean D'Agati for being awarded 3rd place for his CTV opening in the 2007 STN Spring National competition. Zack Fine and Justin Vandenbrock, won 2nd place for their BTN news opening in the same competition. Congratulations to all of them.


CCHS Partners In Education Honored at District Community Involvement Awards

The District recently honored those who dedicate their time and effort to benefit Broward County students and help to improve education in Broward County Public Schools. The District’s top mentors, volunteers and business partners were all recognized at the Community Involvement Awards event held at the Broward County Convention Center May 2007.

We are proud to announce that two CCHS Partners, the City of Cooper City and Plantation Courtyard by Marriott, were nominated and received recognition as School-Based Partnerships of Merit at the High School Level. We thank them for their high level of commitment and dedication to our students, staff and school.


CCHS Softball Players Chosen for All County Teams

Congratulations to Juniors Laura Fountain and Alysse Pujol, and Sophomores Stephanie Kujawa and Stormi Grzybek were chosen for the Sun-Sentinel First Team All County.  The Miami Herald also selected Laura Fountain, Kara Clauss and Stormi Grzybek to their First Team roster.  Alysse Pujol has also been chosen to play for the Puerto Rican National Team!!  Way to Go Cowgirls!!


Congratulations to Linsey Garber, picked 1st team All County Miami Herald for Flag Football.   Also, Christie Airigha, Lissette Rios and Lindsey Krackhower were chose for the Flag Football All Star Team and will represent the South area on May 8th at Nova HS.

Congratulations to our Student Government Association who returned from the state convention with a gold medallion for their projects computed throughout the year. Also, out of the hundreds of projects entered in the state, CCHS SGA took 3rd place for their Invisible Children project. Great job!

Spanish Language Students Bring Home Top Honors at State Competition

Twelve CCHS Spanish students traveled to Orlando on April 19th, 20th and 21st to compete at the Florida State Spanish Competition.  The following students took home trophies and awards in Impromptu Speaking (speaking in Spanish for 2 minutes about a randomly selected topic), Declamations (memorizing and reciting a two minute long poem in Spanish), and Theatrical Presentations:

CCHS Student Receives Recognition by Blood Center

Congratulations to Nicole Biller, Key Club's Blood Drive Chairperson, for winning an award at the Community Blood Center of South Florida's Recognition Luncheon and Awards for the "Best Student Contact" in all of the Dade and Broward County. Also, congratulations  to Key Club for winning two awards at the state convention – one for Club Membership Growth and one for Promoting Literacy. Way to go Key Club!

Automotive Tech Students Qualify to Compete in the State Hands on Competition

We congratulate the teachers and students from Atlantic Technical Center, Cooper City High School, McFatter Technical Center and Sheridan Technical Center for placing in the top 10 in the Ford AAA Troubleshooting written exam. These 4 teams have earned the right to compete in the state hands on contest April 12-13, 2007 at Seminole Community College.

I have lost track of how many years we have had multiple teams in the top ten, but it is a feat unmatched by any other school district. I'm proud to be associated with such talented teachers and students. CTV / BTN -  Does it again..!!
Zack and Justin where chosen as 1 of 5 finalist on 2 NATIONAL competitions held in Anaheim, California.  But  now we are proud to report that they WON!!  Zack Fine and crew won 1st Place on this national competition and Justin Vandenbroeck and crew received 2nd Place for their story submission.  Click on the links to watch their stories and CONGRATULATIONS  to all the students as well as Alfredo Pichardo, CCHS CTV Television Production Advisor, on their accomplishments!!

Spanish Language Students win Awards at District Competition

Congratulations to the CCHS World Languages District Competition Team!  CCHS Spanish students competed in impromptu speaking, declamatioon (poem recitation), project and poster categories and won nine 1st place awards, four 2nd place honors, and one 4th place.  Please join us in congratulating our 1st place winners: Carolyn Pao (impromptu speaking), Brian Montero (impromptu), Ben McAfee (impromptu), Jose Boniche (impromptu & declamation), Danielle Nemeth (declamation), Ryan Allen (declamation), Catalina Winocur (project) and Brent Keller (poster).          

Thespians take High Honors at District Competition

Congradulations to our Thespian students on a job well done this past weekend at our District Individual Event Competition.  All students awarded superior or excellent will be competing at States.  Our students ranked as follows:

  • Solo Musical: Kristine Madden, 3rd place rating, Amanda Heidt, 3rd place rating, Laura Piro, 1st place "superior" rating, Shannon Garlin, 1st place "superior" rating.
  • Duet Musical: Adam Crain & Elliot Semcken, 2nd place "excellent" rating
  • Large Group Musical: Amy Eingold, Emily Squitieri, Laura Piro, Amanda Blitman, Shannon Garlin, Amanda Diaz, Becky Milne, Adam Welsh, Lexy Gaeta, Kelly Riley, Kristine Madden, Amanda Heidt, and Jace Hoey - 1st place "straight superior" rating
  • Duet Acting: Laureen Toiba and Melissa Berger - 1st place "superior" rating
  • Costume Design: Jade Longelin - 1st place "straight superior" rating
  •  Playwriting:  Adam Crain - 1st place "straight superior" rating - and selected as 1 of 4 playwrights to join the Playwriting Laboratory at the State Festival with professional playwrights.

Three CCHS Seniors are Coca-Cola Scholars semifinalists

Seventeen students from Broward County have been selected as semifinalists for the 2006-07 Coca-Cola Scholars Program.  The foundation recognizes high school seniors who have demonstrated academic and civic excellence in and out  of school. Those who advance will be among 250 finalists who will travel to Atlanta April 12-15th for the Coca-Cola Scholars week-end.  The 50 National scholars will each receive a $20,000 scholarship and the 200 regional winners will each receive a $10,000 scholarship. Three of the seventeen are our very own Cooper City seniors--- good luck to  Laura Teisch, Christine Pao and Ariane Rosen!!!!!

Douglas T. Ferraro Innovation Zone Science Exhibition

Congratulations to all students for their excellent work and participation, especially those that were awarded best in category at the ceremony Thursday, Jan. 25th. Special recognition to the Most Outstanding Student Projects: Eric Antmann (CCHS), Jaclyn Gutierrez (Pioneer), Michael Daragan (K-3 grade), and Jared Cohen (4-5 grade) and Sarah Marcellin - 9th grade received the Kaplan Achievement award.  Click here for a list of all the winners.


Cooper City High School Silver Knight Nominees for 2006-2007

The Silver Knight Award is the most prestigious community service scholarship offered in Broward County. Students must initiate and carry out a project benefiting the  community. All of the nominees excel academically and have hundreds of hours of community service in other areas than their specific projects.  They are to be commended as outstanding young people whose way of life is to give of themselves to others.

Coca-Cola Scholars Program Nominees

Congratulations to Christine Pao and Ariane Rosen  for having been selected as one of the 2000 semifinalists in the 2006-2007 Coca-Cola Scholars Program for the outstanding leadership, potential and achievements  they have demonstrated.   If you see them around, please give them a "high five."

Automotive Tech Students Advance to Regional competition

The results are in for the Greater New York Auto Dealers Association written exam conducted 11/30/06 at McFatter Technical Center. Please join us in congratulating CCHS students Mario Ibanez and Thomas Deck, who will be competing in the hands on competition at Sheridan Technical Center Friday 12/15/06.

McFatter Technical Center and Cooper City HS posted the top combined scores for the 2 person teams.   These students will compete against 2 teams from Miami-Dade County for the right to represent the region at the national competition in New York City in March.  Congratulations to all of the participating students and their instructor, Dan Sorrentino, Cooper City High Automotive Technology Program.

Outstanding Staff

Cowboys of Character

We are proud to annouce that Ben McAfee has been selected by the Sun Sentinel as one of the Top Honorees as a Kid of Character.  He will be recogonized at a special awards ceremony May 7th and his photo will be in the Sun Sentinel  Sunday, April 29.

Students selected for Cooper City High's Kids of Character are nominated by their teachers. All nominees receive certificates, and the student selected by the committee is awarded a plaque and  profiled on the "Most Wanted" Bulletin Board outside the main office.  Congratulations to these fine students and special thanks to their teachers for recognizing their efforts and nominating them.

PROFESSIONAL KUDOS 

CCHS teacher Mr. Dennis Maugere received five national honors this year, four for teaching excellence and one for civil rights advocacy. Marquis Who's Who in America, 2005-2006, for multiple professional recognition awards in education reflecting the ability to inspire students to learn and to identify their life goals, and in recognition of significant Civil Rights leadership (Wall of Tolerance Honoree, Montgomery, Alabama, and Leadership Council Member) ; Marquis Who's Who in American Education, 2006-2007; Educational Communications, Inc., Who's Who Among America's Teachers, 2005-2006; and the National Honor Roll's Outstanding American Teachers, 2005-2006.

Karen McAuliffe,  Cooper City High School School counselor,  has earned her National Board Certification.  We recognize her tremendous effort in achieving board-certified status and celebrate her accomplishment.

We congratulate calculus teacher Darryl Schultz, our 2006 Teacher of the YearIt is his commitment to excellence in the classroom, passion for teaching, ability to make difficult concepts easily understood by students and his supportive attitude  for  his colleagues that make him our Teacher of the Year!   Kudos Mr. Schultz.!!!! 

Mr. Schultz has been teaching in Broward County since 1984 and has won the honor of CCHS Teacher of the Year in 1996, 1999, 2001, and now again in 2006.  A Florida native and UCF graduate, Mr. Schultz hopes to become a state finalist with this year's nomination.  He enjoys teaching because it "lets me change the way people think, and effect individual students lives."  A favorite quote is "education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire."  He enjoys fishing, recreational boating, and music as hobbies.  A list of his accomplishments include:

  • Math Club Sponsor; promotes peer tutoring twice weekly after school.
  • Taught at CCHS Community school, as well as at Broward Community College. 
  • Distance learning (Video Conferencing) Calculus for five different High Schools in Broward.
  • Recipient of the 2001 Joseph B. Whitehead Educator of Distinction Award from the Coca Cola Corporation.
  • 2002 University of Florida Outstanding Educator award.
  • He was humbled  and touched last year when second lieutenant Scott Huntley presented him with an Air Force Academy ceremonial sword.  Cadets can buy at most three swords whenthey graduate. He presented one to Mr. Schultz with the statement that he was responsible for turning his life around.

Jamie Curran, our Building Operations Supervisor, has been awarded the Non-Instructional Employee of the Year at Cooper City High School for the 2006-2007 school year.   Jamie has maintained the same high level of commitment to our  school as when he started working for CCHS over 20 years ago!   Throughout his tenure, he has lead a team of hard working individuals who truly care for Cooper City High School as if it were their own home.  Thank you Jamie!!!

We also extend our congratulations to Ms. Michelle Harding, chosen by her peers to be the recipient of the first "Teacher of the Month" award sponsored by Citibank.  She received a check for $50 and a certificate.

Michelle Terl has been named a Finalist for Broward County's Arts Teacher of the Year for 2006 at a ceremony October 25 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.  The Broward Cultural Division in conjunction with several local businesses to promote and celebrate excellence in arts education sponsors the award.  Ms Terl is the drama teacher in our Fine Arts Department, and faculty sponsor for our very active Thespian drama troupe.  Look for her taking a bow at the upcoming production of Little Women, The Musical, playing at CCHS Dec. 14 -16.  Bravo Ms. Terl!!

Congratulations are in order for Claudia Jones, CCHS Support Facilitator, for her instrumental work in obtaining a $1,200 Citibank Success Grant for our Exceptional Student department.  The “Money Matters" award it will be used  to link ESE English and ESE Math classes with real world application of finances.  The students will become more aware of what is required when budgeting, balancing a checkbook, and handling money in general.  Newspapers, interactive sites and other sources will be utilized to stress the importance and responsibility that comes with money.  Interest with credit card charges will be explained, actual ordering and purchasing will be done, and a more hands-on approach will be used.  Thank you to Dr. Jones and Citibank, our Partner in Education for this valuable academic enrichment opportunity.
